OLD TOWN SQUARE – PRAGUE

In the city of Prague in the Czech Republic, the Old Town Square is the oldest and one of the most beautiful places in Europe. It may not be as large as the other metropolitan cities on other parts of the world, but the Old Town Square has played a big role in the country’s remarkable history.

Taking a stroll along the streets of Old Town Square is like turning back the clock, with its ancient structures and cathedrals. As the aroma of brewing coffee from one of the cafes along the Town Square permeates your sense of smell, the ambience will just take you back in time.

The old Town Square occupies 1.7 hectares of land. There is a hint of Gothic and Romanesque styles in the architecture as you study the many colorful buildings in the area.

Right in the center of the Old Town Square stands the statue of Jan Hus. It was built in 1915 as a tribute to his 500th death anniversary. Jan Hus is a prominent Czech historical figure, who was burned alive in 1415 because he was condemned as being a dissident or non-conformist. Lasdilaus Salon designed his monument.

An Ancient Business Center

From the 10th to the 12th century, the Old Town Square in the city of Prague has been teeming with wealthy merchants who sell their products, turning the square into a central market place. This has become the heart and pulse of the city. This little town has also been a living witness to both tragic and great events in the history of its people and country.

Now, a lot of charming cafes and restaurants, as well as galleries and various shops cater to the needs of the tourists who flock the area. A visit to Prague will not be complete without going to the Old Town Square where the heart of the city lies.
