The London Zoo has the distinction of being the world's oldest zoo designed for scientific purposes. Opened in 1828, the London Zoo was originally built to be a place of research and study. In 1847, its doors were opened to the general public, and the rest is history.
Also known as the Zoological Society of London, this zoo is a great place to visit for children and adults of all ages. Here, you will find a remarkable variety of creatures including mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, sea creatures and invertebrates.
The mammals housed at the zoo include wild dogs, lions, camels, zebras, hippos, tigers and many more. You'll also get to see a variety of exotic birds like penguins and flamingoes, to name a few.
There are reptiles such as all kinds of slithering snakes and scaly lizards, exotic bugs and butterflies, dolphins, octopus, fish and so much more to marvel at when you visit the zoo. Two popular exhibits are the Gorilla Kingdom and the Clore Rainforest Lookout.
Gorilla Kingdom is housed in a beautiful clearing which is reached after traveling through a tree lined forest. The trail here features fun and educational exhibits and lets you view majestic gorillas in a habitat very close to what they experience in the wild.
Gorilla Kingdom will immerse you in the sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest. You'll get up-close and personal with a group of Western lowland gorillas.
The Clore Rainforest Lookout exhibit puts you in the midst of a simulated rainforest and lets you visit its creatures up close and personal. It's one of the most popular areas of the zoo, and for good reason. You'll feel like you've been magically transported to the spectacular Amazon!
Admission prices to the London Zoo are £14.55 for adults and £11.40 for children. Children under the age of three are admitted for free with paying adult. Guidebooks cost £3.50.
