Located inside the Hradcany square, a charming 100-year old complex in the 'golden city' of Prague in the Czech Republic - the Saint Vitus’s cathedral is one of the main attractions which will take your breath away.
A visit to the Prague castle will be amiss if you do not pay homage to this magnificent, complexly built church. Once of the things that draws tourists to a particular place is its churches – which bears witness to the people’s faith and becomes a source of pride for the place.
‘Prague’s Most Important Church’
Saint Vitus’s cathedral is Prague’s pride, being the largest and most important church, which became a witness to some of the republic’s historical moments.
Before entering the cathedral, take some time to admire the view from the outside. The roofs of the building have these elegant tapered look, giving justice to Prague’s being the city of a hundred spires. Czech artist Alfons Mucha designed the stained glass windows on the inside of the cathedral.
‘Burial Place’
Prague’s churches are also famous for being the burial place of emperors, kings, princes, and saints. Being Prague’s largest church, the Saint Vitus’s cathedral has served as the
home of the city’s archbishops over the years. This is also where the coronations of Czech kings and queens were held.
On the ambulatory, on the western side of the cathedral, lie the tombs of Wensceslas IV, Rudolf II and Charles IV lie. On the other side of the church lies the remains of Saint Vitus and Saint John of Nepomuk.
‘St. Wenceslas Chapel’
Inside the St. Vitus’s cathedral is a side chapel for St. Wenceslas. Built by artist Peter Parler, it is located above the tomb of Saint Wenceslas and shows King Charles IV’s devotion to the patron saint of the Czechs.
The chapel’s walls are decorated with paintings as well as semi-precious stones to pay tribute to the patron saint. Interestingly enough, this is also where the crown jewels are kept.
All in all, Saint Vitus’s cathedral is one impressive structure, which is rich in history and showcases the faith and devotion of the people of magnificent city of Prague.
